Weather in Auckland was pretty miserable when we arrived but we braved the ferry to Waiheke to taste 10 different wines and some nice cheeses too.
We decided against going up sky tower when we realised there was nothing to see but clouds and mist.
Cyclone was making the whale watching difficult but we persevered and after 3 days of closed roads and boats not going out we managed to see a young humpback from a helicopter.
More helicoptering a few days later over the glaciers this time – wow!.
We drove many miles on twisty/turny mountain roads in rain and shine – we stopped to admire the views as we found them regardless of the weather . I have lots of photos of amazing views taken through the car windscreen accompanied by windscreen wipers!
We did have some amazingly beautiful days too – the view from our Queenstown room was fab especially as the sun set.
We did shotover jet when the river was pretty high which added to the fun – in fact they changed our time as they had stopped going out due to the river being so high – so that gave us just enough time to admire the views from the gondola. After that we did the trip on TSS Earnslaw – so a pretty full day.
We managed to find a fly/nature cruise/fly option to Milford sound and we had a perfect day for it weather wise – and I managed to bag the front seat on the way there – you were right – it is an amazing trip!
We finished the trip back in Auckland – thankfully the weather was better so we got great views from the skytower – we decided to go for it and do the skywalk – G is NOT a big fan of heights but he did it without passing out or screaming!
On the whole the motels/hotels were great – the woman at the Christchurch Motel welcomed us as her ‘refugees; and gave us a voucher for free wine at the restaurant that was within staggering distance – that was a nice touch.
We have come home with lots of amazing memories and even more photos to sort through and remind of what we did where and when – it’s already a bit of a blur.
Thanks again for you help in making it an amazing experience that we will always remember.
