ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrive Auckland

  • Highlights: Arrive Auckland, pick up your rental car at the Auckland Airport branch and make your way downtown to enjoy the waterfront and sights of this very cosmopolitan and vibrant city.
Day 2: Day at Leisure

  • Highlights: From the SkyTower to Britomart, Viaduct Harbour, Wynyard Quarter, Farmers Market, Auckland's downtown and waterfront area offers a wonderful array of sights and sounds. Waitemata Harbour offers outstanding water activities, including sailing, kayaking and harbour cruising. Maybe a day trip to nearby Waiheke Island for a wine tour or to Auckland's surrounding rain forests and beaches for hiking and cycle trails. Climb the Harbour Bridge or simply enjoy the waterfront views from Princes Wharf.
Day 3: To Hobbiton and Tauranga

  • Highlights: Leave the bright lights of Auckland across the fertile farmlands of the Waikato region to Matamata. Ever since the first Lord of the Rings movie was released in 2001, New Zealand has been known as the Home of Middle-earth. The rolling hills of Matamata are home to the idyllic Hobbiton Movie Set, set on a land of lush pastures that was chosen to play The Shire. Enjoy a guided tour of the movie set.

    Driving time Auckland to Matamata approx 2 hours.

    Leaving Hobbiton behind it’s a short drive through the Kaimai-Mamaka Forest Park and local farmland to Tauranga. The prosperous city of Tauranga sprawls along the edge of an attractive harbour in the heart of the sun-drenched Bay of Plenty. There’s a well developed café culture and boat charters are available to take you big game fishing, snorkelling or dolphin watching. Nearby Mt Maunganui is a destination for surfing and beach walking.

Day 4: Free day Tauranga

  • Highlights: A day in the beautiful Bay of Plenty offers a myriad of activities. Food & wine tours featuring the abundant local produce, glowworm kayaking through a bush fringed canyon, deep sea fishing for king fish, local beach and bush hiking, mineral springs to ease away aches and rejuvenate tired muscles. Perhaps a day trip to the beautiful beaches of the Coromandel Peninsula or excursion to a live marine volcano.
Day 5: To Tongariro National Park

  • Highlights: Leave Tauranga for the short drive south to Rotorua, renowned for its rich Maori culture, adventure and outdoor activities and geothermal attractions. Continue on to the resort township of Taupo located on the shores of New Zealand's largest lake and known for its fishing, adventure & thermal activities. Worthwhile stopovers en route include Waimangu and Waiotapu geothermal reserves, Aratiatia Rapids and the thundering Huka Falls. Shirt the shores of Lake Taupo to the alpine town of Turangi at the start of the Tongariro National Park (World Heritage Site). Located on the banks of the Tongariro River, Turangi is the unofficial trout fishing headquarters of New Zealand. The Tongariro National Park village enjoys panoramic views of Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu, the 3 volcanic cones that dominate the skyline above the Tongariro National Park. In the summer it is a popular base for hiking, biking and kayaking within the national Park, by winter it is a thriving ski hub. Award winning New Zealand film maker, Sir Peter Jackson, brought the Lord of the Rings trilogy alive using locations here in the Ruapehu district. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is considered New Zealand's best one-day hike, while the myriad of other scenic walks suit every fitness level and promise outstanding scenery every step.

Day 6: To Taihape

  • Highlights: Leave behind the volcanic surroundings of Tongariro as you travel south through the small settlements to the charming mountain town of Ohakune is the southern gateway to the Tongariro National Park and also known as a market gardening area. Join State Highway 1 to Waiouru, home to the New Zealand Army's largest military base. Travel south along the Desert Road to the small rural town of Taihape.

Day 7: Great Canyons of Rangitikei, with LOTR scenes

  • Highlights: Taihape and district, with its stunning landscapes, close to mountains, rivers and lakes, not only provides fertile land for sheep and deer farming but a great destination for visitors looking for relaxation or adventure. Taihape is also known as the ‘gumboot capital of New Zealand’. It takes this title seriously, hosting a Gumboot Day festival every year in March. If you have time to spare in Taihape, the town’s domain has a network of bush walks. Local adventure activities include the famous Mokai Gravity Canyon, as well as white-water rafting, abseiling, kayaking, jet boating and horse trekking at River Valley. Today we have included a full day scenic float river rafting trip, Great Canyons of Rangitikei, through LOTR movie locations.
    Take a journey through the towering Mokai Gorge, drift alongside walls as seen in the Lord of the Rings movies and lunch near the spectacular Jurassic Park waterfall.
Day 8: To Wellington

  • Highlights: Continue your drive south along the Desert Road passing through small rural towns to the vibrant city of Palmerston North. The New Zealand Rugby Museum is a must-see as are the public sculptures around the inner city. Travel down the Kapiti coast to Wellington, travelling through the town of Bulls is known for its antique shops, Levin which has a thriving clothing industry and many factory shops and Waikanae known for its car museum, gourmet cheese factory and offshore Kapiti Island, a nature reserve for close encounters with rare birds. Wellington, New Zealand's Capital City, is home to a powerful mix of culture, history, nature and cuisine. Highlight features include its stunning harbour location, Te Papa National Museum, theatres and galleries, high street stores and culinary havens.

Day 9: Wellington LOTR Tour
