ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrive Auckland

  • Highlights: Welcome to New Zealand. On arrival at Auckland International Airport, pick up your rental car and make your way to your central city accommodation.
    Depending on your arrival time, you may opt to enjoy some sea air on a harbour cruise this afternoon, or take the SkyTower for stunning city views.
Day 2: Auckland - Whangamata/Tairua

  • Highlights: Drive southeast to the seaside town of Whangamata, located at the southern end of the Coromandel Peninsula. Spend the afternoon exploring Hot Water Beach, where you can dig your own hot pool on the beach (2 hours each side of low tide) or take a guided kayaking trip to Cathedral Cove from Hahei.

Day 3: Whangamata - Free day to walk the Karangahake Walkway

  • Highlights: A free day to explore the Karangahake Gorge, New Zealand's Gorge of Gold. The Karangahake Historic Walkway offers a pleasant day trip walking alongside the Ohinemuri River. See impressive rusting and crumbling buildings and machines of the Victoria Battery gold refinery complex, plus the tumbling Owharoa waterfall in its scenic bush setting. The walk is 7km (4 hours return).
Day 4: Whangamata - Rotorua

Time this afternoon to enjoy The Redwoods Whakarewarewa Forest, primarily a plantation forest with dedicated walking tracks. Landscapes include towering Californian Coastal Redwoods, native plants & exotic trees.

Day 6: Rotorua - Tongariro National Park

Day 8: Tongariro National Park - Wellington

  • Highlights: An interesting stop today is the Army Museum at Waiouru before heading south to Wellington via the Kapiti Coast. Spectacular beach walk opportunities at Waikanae and Pukerua Bay en route. Perhaps enjoy an evening harbour waterfront walk this evening.

Day 9: Wellington - Picton - Kaiteriteri

  • Highlights: This morning drop off your rental car at the Wellington ferry terminal and take the 3 hour scenic cruise to Picton, in the heart of the beautiful Marlborough Sounds. Uplift a replacement vehicle at the Picton ferry terminal and take a leisure drive, via Nelson, to Kaiteriteri, the gateway to the Abel Tasman National Park.
Day 10: Kaiteriteri / Abel Tasman National Park

Day 11: Kaiteriteri - Westport

  • Highlights: Follow the picturesque Motueka River valley road to Kohatu, continue south to Murchison. The spectacular Buller Gorge swing bridge (New Zealand's longest) takes you to a number of bush walks ranging from 15 minutes to an hour. Gold panning, comet line and jetboating also available.
    Kaiteriteri to Westport driving time: approx. 3 hours, 40 mins
Day 12: Westport - Hokitika

  • Highlights: Westport's Coaltown Museum or a side trip to the Denniston Plateau to view historic coal mining relics and the infamous Denniston Incline are options this morning. Also here is the Cape Foulwind Walkway and Tauranga Bay Seal Colony. The drive south, via the Punakaiki Pancake Rocks, is one of New Zealand's finest coastal roads, flanked also by the Paparoa National Park.
    Tonight, take the short walkway in to the Glow Worm Dell.
    Westport to Hokitika driving time: approx. 2 hours
Day 13: Hokitika - Franz Josef

  • Highlights: Explore the walkways of nearby Lake Kaniere and Hokitika Gorge, optional treetop walkway south of Hokitika.

Follow and cross the Hooker River twice on swing bridges. The track ends at the glacier lake with amazing views of Aoraki/Mount Cook, Hooker Glacier and Southern Alps.
Day 22: Mount Cook - Christchurch
