ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrive Christchurch

  • Highlights: Arrive Christchurch and be transferred to pick up your rental car. Your centrally-located accommodation is close to Hagley Park and the Botanic Gardens. Perhaps take the kids for a canoe paddle on the Avon River or feed the ducks on the riverbank. Optional visit the Christchurch Gondola for hilltop views of the city, International Antarctic Visitor Centre and renowned Canterbury Museum.
Day 2: Christchurch - Oamaru

  • Highlights: Travel across the broad Canterbury Plains, with the spectacular Southern Alps as a backdrop to the rural township of Ashburton, a major service centre for the local farming district. Follow the east coast through the small city of Timaru with the beach side attractions of Caroline Bay, botanic gardens, an aviary and wonderful walks. Next is the township of Oamaru which has an impressive heritage and has recently been awarded the title "Sharpest Town in New Zealand". Many of the elegant historic buildings were made from the local sandstone. Visit the Harbour-Tyne area
  • the best-preserved collection of historic commercial buildings in New Zealand. You should also check out the penguin colony, the museum and the pretty public gardens.

    Christchurch to Oamaru driving time: approx 3 hours, 20 mins
Day 3: Oamaru - Queenstown

  • Highlights: Follow the mighty Waitaki River inland, skirting the shores of Lake Waitaki and Lake Aviemore to reach the junction at Omarama. Omamara is a small township, known for its clear blue skies, beautiful dawn and dusk colours, and as a world class gliding site. Take time to visit the giant fluted “Clay Cliffs”, Ladybird Hill New Zealand’s highest vineyard or perhaps enjoy a soak in the hot tubs filled with fresh mountain water. Continue your travel south from Omarama, crossing the spectacular landscape of the Lindis Pass that takes you into the Central Otago region. Pass through the heritage & horticultural town of Tarras, and then follow the shores of beautiful Lake Dunstan's shores to the charming rural township of Cromwell, famous for its stone fruit and renowned nearby Bannockburn wineries. The narrow, rugged Kawarau Gorge opens to the wide Gibbston Valley as you pass Lake Hayes to the vibrant resort of Queenstown, nestled on the shores of Lake Wakatipu.

    Oamaru to Queenstown driving time: approx. 3 hours, 30 mins
Day 4: Queenstown - Optional Family Sightseeing

  • Highlights: Queenstown offers a multitude of family-orientated activities such as the Skyline Luge Ride and Gondola. Cycle one of the new trails around the Wakatipu Basin, tracks from just an hour to several hours, depending on ability. Take a thrilling jetboat ride on the Dart River or Kawarau River (minimum child age applies). Explore Arrowtown and drive down the Kawarau Gorge to watch the jumpers at AJ Hackett Bungy.
    We've included a lake cruise on the vintage steamer Earnslaw and visit to the Walter Peak High Country Farm.
Day 5: Queenstown - Franz Josef

  • Highlights: Drive along the shores of Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea with their impressive mountain backdrops and on through the imposing Mount Aspiring National Park with it's extraordinary beauty. Continue through Haast Pass, then follow the Haast River to the coast. Stop at Knight Point for outstanding coastal views of the Tasman Sea, peaceful Lake Moeraki and Lake Paringa to enter the Westland National Park. Pass through the Fox Glacier village to Franz Josef Glacier township with its exciting outdoor activities such as guided glacier hikes, scenic helicopter flights, kayaking on nearby lakes. A soak in the hot pools completes a star studded day.
    Queenstown to Franz Josef driving time: approx 5 hours, 40 mins
Day 6: Franz Josef - Hokitika

  • Highlights: The Westland National Park displays its highlights with mirror lakes Mapourika and Ianthe, towering native forests with the dramatic snow-capped Southern Alps in the background. Steeped in rich gold mining history, Hokitika also has nearby Hokitika Gorge, Treetops Walkway and even some local glow worms!

    Franz Josef to Hokitika driving time: approx. 1 hour, 45 mins
Day 7: Hokitika - Kaiteriteri (Abel Tasman National Park)

  • Highlights: View some of the West Coast's beautiful lush rainforest as you leave Hokitika, north bound for Kaiteriteri. Pass through Greymouth, located on the Grey River and the largest town on the South Island’s west coast. From Greymouth follow the spectacular coast road to Punakaiki, considered one of the top 10 coastal drives in the world by Lonely Planet. The Pancake Rocks and Blowholes at Punakaiki are world famous and the 20 minute loop track to Dolomite Point gives the best views of these 30 million year old rock formations. Drive along the rugged Buller River gorge, its spectacular swing bridge (New Zealand's longest) takes you to a number of bush walks ranging from 15 minutes to an hour. Follow the Buller River inland to Murchison then enjoy the dense forest of the Kahurangi National Park through to Kohatu. The fruit orchards of the picturesque Motueka River Valley and vineyards surrounding Motueka take you to the idyllic beachside settlement of Kaiteriteri

    Hokitika to Kaiteriteri driving time: approx 5 hours, 10 mins
Day 8: Free Day - Abel Tasman National Park

  • Highlights: This small, beachside settlement with it's amazing golden sand beaches is gateway to stunning bush walks including the famous Abel Tasman National Park track. Take a scenic cruise to an idyllic beach for swimming and relaxing, or take a gentle hike to nearby bays to be picked up by boat again later in the day (boat trip included). Catch a glimpse of local fur seals from a sea kayak, try stand up paddle boarding or just stretch out on the beach and enjoy the tranquil views across Tasman Bay to the Marlborough Sounds.
Day 9: Kaiteriteri - Hanmer Springs

  • Highlights: Follow the meandering Motueka River Valley with outstanding views of the Kahurangi National Park. From Howard Junction, follow the mighty Buller River through the rugged gorge to Murchison, the small town hub where you can see Middle-earth landscapes for yourself. The township was founded on gold and has become a haven for nature enthusiasts, with dramatic scenery and fast flowing rivers. The rivers are also host to some of the best brown trout fly fishing in the world. Craggy mountain ranges offer scenic walks and magnificent alpine vistas. Through the Maruia Forest further south to Springs Junction before crossing the Lewis Pass. The Lewis River keeps you company for much of the way to Hanmer Springs, located on the fringe of the Hanmer Forest. Home of Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa, the village boasts walking and cycle tracks, surrounding mountains and forests, quality shops and boutiques and a wide range of eateries and attractions.

    Kaiteriteri to Hanmer Springs driving time: approx 4 hours, 30 mins
Day 10: Depart Christchurch
  • Highlights: A short drive today, travel through the wine growing region of Waipara which leads you to the vast Canterbury Plains. Cross the Waimakariri River as you approach Christchurch city, with Hagley Park, the beautiful Botanic Gardens and meandering Avon River fringed with graceful willow trees.
    Drop off your rental car at Christchurch Airport before your departure flight.
