ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrive Christchurch

  • Highlights: On arrival in Christchurch pick up your rental car from the airport branch and make your way to your central accommodation.
    Remainder of the day is at leisure to explore the city, perhaps stroll graceful Hagley Park, take a ride on the historic tram or rent a bike for a quiet pedal around the inner city!
Day 2: Christchurch - Omarama

  • Highlights: Head south via the rural towns of Geraldine and Fairlie to the spectacular alpine lake region of Lake Tekapo and Lake Pukaki. Take time for a side trip to the Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, before arriving at the small village of Omarama. Optional: take a luxurious soak in the hot tubs. The mountain views are outstanding!

Day 3: Omarama - Cromwell

  • Highlights: The Central Otago's Rail Trail offers spectacular outback scenery on a well graded gravel cycle trail once travelled by steam trains. Remote settlements and cafes welcome cyclists with warm hospitality and refreshments.
    A "Taste the Trail" package cycle hire on the Rail Trail is included. Get fitted on your bike at the Trail Journeys depot in Clyde, then travel by shuttle to Auripo where you will be dropped off for the return 55km bike ride to Clyde. Impressive viaducts and bridges, farms, orchards, tunnels and river gorges make this a day of spectacular scenery.
Day 5: Cromwell - Te Anau

  • Highlights: Drive through the rugged Kawarau Gorge with its sheer rock cliffs, via Frankton then south skirting Lake Wakatipu to Te Anau, the gateway to the Fiordland National Park.
    This afternoon you have the opportunity for an optional bike ride from Te Anau village to the control gates at the start of the Waiau River, approx 10km of easy grade 2 cycle trail. A highly scenic ride with stunning views across Lake Te Anau to the Fiordland mountains.

Day 6: Milford Sound or Doubtful Sound

Day 11: Wanaka - Hokitika

Day 12: Hokitika - Motueka/Kaiteriteri
